Meet Neko

Pavement or dirt? Path or street? Why choose only one? This is the new Trek Neko SL — a women's specific bike that can handle (almost) anything that gets in its way.

Think of it as half mountain bike, half hybrid. The 700c (road diameter) wheels will keep you moving on pavement, but the front fork (which can lock), hydraulic disc brakes and wider tires (with knobby edges) let you tackle non-paved surfaces, too.

Here's the perfect use: Keystone Trail and Wabash Trace. Lock the fork on the Keystone and unlock it on the Wabash, where the surface is a little bit rougher. Either way, Neko can handle it.

If you thought Wes' Madone had a quick turnaround, this one seems almost too good to be true: 5 business days. We ordered it late last Saturday afternoon (as in last weekend) and it arrived on Thursday morning.

It's Trek's US-made Madone 6 Series frame, and Leah outfitted it via Project One with a SRAM Force build kit, Bontrager RXL wheels and a Bontrager RXL Blade carbon handlebar. It's light, fast and gorgeous. Look for it out on the road — it will be blasting past you on the left.

Raise your hand if you actually like energy bars -- as in, you like the way they taste? We're not big fans, either, but they're a means to an end. You need energy, they have it.

But there's a new energy source in the store: the Stinger Waffle by Honey Stinger. Inspired by the syrup-layered version found in Europe, the Stinger Waffle has two thin layers of waffle-cone like crunch around a thin layer of honey. It tastes every bit as awesome as it sounds.

We also have new Castelli women's thermal jerseys. They're perfect for these chilly mornings, and comfy enough to wear all day.

We have thermal jerseys for the dirt, too. Jett tweaked its summer lineup with a fleecy upgrade for the cold-weather months. The knickers to the right are designed to go under a Jett baggy short. From mid-thigh down, it's all fleece. There's a pad included, too. Nice!

Here's probably one of the best wind jackets we've seen. It's from Castelli, it's almost entirely made of Wind Stopper material and it has some sweet features like front and back vents, a flip-up, fleecy collar and Velcro on the sleeve cuffs for a nice, tight fit. Want to keep the wind off? This is the jacket.

Winter is coming (it's true)

Yup, it's going to get cold. It's inescapable. And you're going to have to bundle up, right? You might as well look good doing it.

We have wool jerseys for men and women. Both are 50-50 wool-and-acrylic blends. They're fully washable, soft and comfortable. Oh, and fully awesome, too.

Wool-blend caps, too? Absolutely -- and in three colors, too!

These may seem like unassuming tights and bibshorts, but trust us -- there's way more to it than that. The top piece is a full-length thermal bib tight that includes Castelli's top-end Progretto X2 pad (it's the same one Cervelo Test Team had in its bibshorts). The bottom piece is a thermal bibshort. You know those days where it's too warm for tights but too chilly for standard shorts? Wear these. You'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

We're getting a bit ahead of ourselves with the fleece and wool bits, aren't we? You're probably right. Check out the long-sleeved Prologo jersey. It's the same material and cut as the summer version, just with long sleeves. Perfect for those 50-degree mornings.

Five things: Early September version

There's new stuff again -- and it's even better than the last batch. Read on!

1. The Gary Fisher Collection

First announced earlier in the summer, the Gary Fisher Collection is a new direction for both Fisher bikes and Trek. Not all Trek dealers had Fisher bikes available to them, so by rebranding the Fisher line as a Trek line, every Trek dealer can get on the Fisher bandwagon. It's the same cutting-edge technology as before, but with an even wider range. We currently have the Paragon, Hi-Fi, Cobia and Utopia in stock, with more on the way.

2. Fall/winter clothing

Yeah, we know it's still September, and there's still plenty of warm weather in store for us. But pretty soon the mornings are going to carry a certain chill. And pretty soon after that it's going to be flat-out cold. So here's the first batch of goods from Pearl Izumi: lightweight gloves, a lightweight long-sleeved jersey and some baggy knickers. Nice. Time for a coffee-shop ride.

3. New Bontrager helmets

The helmets we mentioned last time around are starting to arrive. This is the Solstice Youth (white) and Solstice WSD. They will replace the Vapor in the lineup at the $45 price point. More colors are on the way, as are entries in the rest of the line.

4. Cervelo S2

It's hard to explain sometimes, but some bikes are faster than others. Sure, the rider plays a pretty big role, but climbing aboard the Cervelo S2 pretty much guarantees a pretty good turn of speed. With a full-carbon frame and fork, the S2's aero tubing is designed for flat-out speed. But unlike other aero bikes, it's actually comfortable, too. You don't have to choose between speed and comfort anymore -- you can have both.

5. Zipp and Bontrager tires

Hey, speaking of aero, Zipp and Bontrager each have some pretty cool ideas about going faster. Zipp is known for its dimpled rims -- like on a golf ball -- and passion for aerodynamic supremacy. The dimples have found a home on tires, too. Think about it -- what's the leading edge of your bike? The tires. So why aren't they built for aerodynamics, too? Voila: dimples.

Bontrager, on the other hand, puts an "aero wing" on its R4 Aero tire. Instead of dimples, Bontrager fills that area between the tire and braking surface -- that tiny little valley -- with a straight ring of rubber. Instead of creating turbulence in that valley, the air flows right over the top. Pretty cool, huh?

We have all of his stuff and more in stock right now, and more new stuff arriving almost daily. Come check it out -- and keep an eye on our sale table, too. Right now it's loaded with leftovers from last winter. It needs to go before we show off more new stuff!

Five things we're excited about

Last week, Bryan, the boys from the other stores (Trek O Papillion, KC, St. Louis) and some of the higher-ups went to Wisconsin for the annual Trek World show. It was new stuff, wall to wall. Here are five things we're psyched to show you (and we'll have them all sooner or later):

1. Trek Earl
At $439, the Earl is simplicity at its best. Single-speed, versatile, fun. It has dual top tubes -- spaced a couple of inches apart -- to hold a U-lock. Beauty.

2. Speed Concept

The Speed Concept is pretty much the polar opposite of the Earl. Starting at under $2,000 and heading north of $10,000, the Speed Concept is for going fast. Period. There will be three frames to choose from -- the 9, 7 and 2 Series. According to Trek's white paper study, the 9 is the fastest TT/tri bike on the market. The 7 is the second fastest. Third? Assuming testing goes as planned, that would be the 2.

3. New helmets
Trek has, admittedly, been lagging behind in helmets. Where other brands have it dialed, Trek's had the same stuff for a while. Well, no longer. The company showed off its new entry- and mid-level lids -- the Solstice and Quantum. They'll replace the Vapor and Interval, respectively. And there's more on the way ... .

4. New shoes

Bontrager shoes have been around for a couple of seasons now, but it's time for a revamped lineup. The XXX-Lite road shoe (above) is the biggest splash -- and it's awesome. Super-light and super-stiff, it's a pro-level shoe in every way. Also notable is the Race MTB shoe. For $90, you get a stiff, lightweight shoe that's reworked from the ground up. It's a huge improvement over anything else out there under $100.

5. Madone SSL

You didn't think we'd skip the flagship road bike, did you? No way. The new 6 Series SSL is lighter, stiffer and faster than the previous model. When you mash the pedal, it goes -- plain and simple. The current 6 Series remains for 2011, as does the 4 Series. A reworked 5 Series and a new 3 Series Madone round out the lineup.

There you have it. We'll have 'em all at some point. It's gonna be a fun year!

Hey, it's been a while since we showed off the new stuff. Rest assured, if you haven't been in the store for a while, you're going to like what you see.

Just pretend it's cold outside

Think back to the images of cycling's past — the grandest photos all feature stunning backdrops and riders struggling against the challenge of the day. Those cycling ghosts all had something in common: wool.

Wool jerseys, wool shorts. And while wool shorts, thankfully, are long gone, wool jerseys have remained a staple of cool-weather riding. Sure, there are now better materials for the job, but nothing has that same panache.

Race Across the Sky

On Thursday night, join Trek Bicycle Stores, THOR (your local trail advocacy organization) and professional racer Travis Brown (pictured above) for an encore screening of Race Across the Sky -- the story of the 2009 Leadville Trail 100.

We hear it all the time: My route to work would be too hilly on a bike. And in Omaha, it's probably true. Nobody likes getting worked over on the way to work -- not even us.

In this year's Tour of the Gila, Lance Armstrong and his RadioShack teammates wore a retro jersey for the four-day event. Featuring old-school logos of Radio Shack, Trek, Nissan and Nike, it was meant to be a one-off production.

We at the Trek Store pride ourselves in doing everything we can to take care of our customers. We want you to love everything about your bike. Recently, we had a customer who wanted a Cervelo R3, but didn't want the Shimano Ultegra 6700 group that was on it. So we ordered him a new gruppo.

He left happy, and we're left with that Ultegra group. If you've been looking for a new gruppo to spruce up that frame you still love, this is the ticket. It's brand new, unridden (except for testin) and ready for a new home.

The group is complete: shifters, brakes, derailleurs, crank, cassette, bottom bracket and chain. The crank is full-sized (53/39) and has 172.5mm crankarms. The cassette is a 12-25.

The best part? The price: $1,000, with half-price installation ($75). (Retail price plus installation would be $1,650 or so.)

One hot ride

Most times, bikes look way better in person than they do on a computer screen. When this one was ordered, we weren't quite sure about the setup. Bright green, bright blue? Flames? Yikes.

As soon as we pulled it out of the box, we knew it was going to look great. Enjoy the photos below.

The flames are amazing! The drop-shadow detailing was unexpected and carries an almost 3-D feel.

Here's where the paint really jumps. The metallic blue really comes out in the sunshine. All told, it's a really, really cool bike.

Had your eyes on snowshoes for a while but wondered if it would be worth it?

This might be the winter to take the plunge. This snow isn't going anywhere for a long, long while. So instead of staying inside all the time, get out and have some fun.

We'll have Atlas 9 Series snowshoes in stock soon (tentatively January 13) for men and women. They'll be a part of a kit that includes a pair of snowshoes, poles and a storage/carrying bag. They'll be priced at $200 for the whole works.

The weather outside is frightful

Well, maybe not frightful anymore, but it sure isn't good for road riding. With that in mind, we're pleased to announced expanded indoor trainer sessions through the rest of the winter.

Starting next week (December 14), the weekly schedule will be as follows:

Tuesday night - 7 p.m.-8:15 p.m.
Thursday night - 7 p.m.-8:15 p.m.
Saturday morning - 8:30 a.m.-9:45 a.m.

For each session, we'll have demo trainers available for rental at just $5. Demo trainers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. You can, of course bring your own trainer as well. It's best to arrive about 15 minutes early to get your bike set up and ready to go.

We'll do 60- to 80-minute workouts each time, so bring a couple of water bottles and a towel. It's going to get sweaty.

Well folks, it had to happen sometime - the weather is going to be taking a turn for the worse soon. It's gonna be cold, it's probably going to be wet. We won't even mention snow.

But if you still want to get your workout in, Trek Omaha is the place. Starting this Saturday - December 5 - and continuing through the winter, we'll have indoor trainer classes.

Here's how it works:
8:30 a.m. start (9:45 a.m. finish)
Bring your trainer (we have five trainers available to rent for $5 per session)
Bring a towel (you're going to sweat)
Bring a bottle or two (again, you're going to sweat)

We'll pop in a Spinervals or Carmichael Training System DVD, climb aboard and get to it. Rental trainers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Old School

Here's a blast from the past. It's Trek's new Belleville, an updated take on a classic design. It's a steel frame ready for city riding. As a bonus, it's part of Trek's push toward Earth-friendly construction. The tires are made of recycled rubber, as are the grips and saddle. In fact, the saddle can be disassembled and recycled.

See the wiring? The Belleville has a built in lighting system, along with racks in the front and back.

Here's the recyclable saddle. Clip the ties on the underside and the whole thing comes apart, ready to be tossed into the recycling bin.

So, you want to go fast?

We're getting new bits in on a pretty regular basis these days. This beauty came in earlier this afternoon and jumped out of the box pretty quickly.

It's a 2010 Trek Madone 6.5. It features SRAM's new and improved Force group, which is lighter than Shimano Dura-Ace 7900 -- and shifts faster, too.

Also included: Bontrager Aeolus 5.0 ACC carbon wheels. The bonus with these is the aluminum braking surface -- no special brake pads are needed if you switch from these wheels to a more traditional setup.

New for 2010, the 6 Series Madones are ready for Bontrager's integrated speed/cadence pod, the Node. No zip-ties are needed to deliver accurate, wireless readings. Also, all of the cables are routed internally for a clean, low-maintenance setup.

Finally, here are some numbers to think about: This bike weighs 15.08 pounds without pedals. Add a couple of carbon-fiber bottle cages and some lightweight pedals, and you still might not top 15.5 pounds.

The price: $5,170 for a bike built on the same frame Lance and Team Astana rode in this year's Tour de France.

Time is drawing short to register for the third annual Trek Breast Cancer Awareness Ride. On October 10, cyclists across the country will ride to raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer.

Join us at 10 a.m. on the 10th at Rick's Boatyard Cafe near downtown Omaha (345 Riverfront Drive) for a scenic ride along the riverfront.

Tony the UPS guy dropped a few things off the other day. Of course, he does that every day, but not like this. Below you'll find a pair of 2010 Madone 5.2s. Pictures don't do either of them justice.

This beauty is a size 54 in matte white. It has a full Ultegra 6700 group, which was redesigned to take advantage of the new Dura-Ace technology. It includes Bontrager Race Lite wheels and is listed at $3,699.99.

This one is a 56 and also includes Race Lite wheels. It has an upgraded build kit called Dura-Ace Lite. The crank and derailleurs are Dura-Ace, but the shifters and brakes are Ultegra. Mechanically, the whole system is identical to a full Dura-Ace setup. But by subbing the shifters and brakes, costs are kept down a bit. The tag on this one says $4,299.99.

Keep an eye out for two more 2010 Madones. We have a 52cm WSD model in the works, along with a super pro-looking Madone 6.5.

Local Radio Talk Show Host Offers to Give Bicyclists a Voice

Requests Help from Cycling Community

KFAB radio talk show host Tom Becka has offered the Omaha area bicycle community an opportunity to appear on a full hour segment of his daily 4:00-7:00 show. Becka asks that for the air time, the bicycle community assist him in his drive to gather used or new winter coats in good condition. The spring Winter Coat Drive will provide needed clothing for Native Americans at South Dakota reservations, some of the most impoverished people in America. Coats will also be donated locally to the Open Door Mission.

Becka’s challenge—the cycling community must gather and deliver 100 used winter coats to him by next Friday, May 15.

Members of the cycling community will be able to express their thoughts on issues relevant to their concerns: commuting and the need for dedicated bike lanes on streets, trail expansion and related property acquisition and other cycling issues including safety and advocacy.

Becka, a long-time critic of some bicyclists practices, promises to be even-handed and give us a fair hearing.

The Omaha Pedalers Bicycle Club is leading the effort with assistance from Activate Omaha and area bicycle shops. To donate coats, drop them off at an area bicycle shop and the Omaha Pedalers will deliver them to KFAB studios before Becka’s show next Friday.

Bike to Work Week is approaching!

Though every month is bike month for us at the Trek Store, May is special. The temperatures are into the 70s and the sun stays up longer.

May also includes National Bike To Work Week, from the 11th to the 15th. Help get the week started by joining us at the Mayor's Bike Ride on May 11.

Sponsored by Activate Omaha, the five-mile ride starts at 2702 S. 10th Street, goes past the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge downtown and then heads back. Registration is at 8 a.m., and the ride starts at 8:45.

Help us highlight the benefits of Going By Bike -- join us for the Mayor's Bike Ride, then keep riding the rest of the week. Once you start, it's hard to stop!

Maybe you were inspired by the warm spring breeze. Or maybe one of your friends or relatives got you started.

Either way, we're glad to see new cyclists on the road. But we often hear, as a new bike heads out, "where do you ride?"

Omaha has a vast network of paved recreational trails, as well as great streets to ride throughout the city. But sometimes a tour guide helps.

To that end, we're happy to announce our new beginners ride. Starting this Saturday (May 2) and running every other week, the beginners ride will focus on fun and safety. We'll leave from the Trek Store and ride for 60 to 90 minutes.

This is a no-drop ride -- no riders will be left to fend for themselves while the group rolls on. Expect a casual pace, too -- less than 15 mph.

In addition to riding, once a month we'll take a look at routine bike maintenance issues: changing flats, lubricating a chain, adjusting brakes and more.

Here's the deal for this week:
-- Saturday, May 2
-- 9 a.m. (this is when the ride leaves, not when you arrive. Be ready to roll out at 9.)
-- One-hour ride, starting and ending at the Trek Store
-- The store will not be open, so come prepared to ride
-- Helmets are required
-- At least one water bottle is required

After the ride, feel free to hang out, ask questions or head out for more miles. It's going to be a great day!

Hey kids -- don't miss the upcoming Kids Triathlon, sponsored by Hy-Vee and Hormel, on Sunday, April 26 at Common Ground Community Center in Omaha.

The race features three age categories each for boys and girls: 6-8, 9-11 and 12-14. Registration is $20 and is open online until April 23.
